Coming Soon – Nikon D810

1542_D810_leftNikon has announced a new upgrade to their popular D800 series, the D810. Featuring a 36.3 megapixel sensor with no Optical Low Pass Filter, similar to the D800E and a brand new Expeed 4 Processor which is 30% faster, provides less noise, supports 1080p 60fps video, and allows up to 1,200 shots or 40 minutes of video per battery charge. The ISO range has been increased with a minimum ISO of 32 (was 50) and a maximum of 51,200 (was 25,600). A brand new highlight metering mode has been added which should help with shooting spot lit environments, such as a play or concert. The biggest advancement on the D810 though is in its video features. The D810 features an internal stereo microphone with optional preset frequency ranges for better audio. It is both compatible with external recorders and allows for dual recording to both the memory card slot and the external recorder. The rear LCD screen has also been enlarged from 3 to 3.2 inches.

Pre-order your Nikon D810 now at Bergen County Camera by stopping in, messaging us on facebook, or giving us a call.

Upcoming Canon and Nikon Classes

If you recently started taking photos with, are looking to buy, or have never felt comfortable with your Canon or Nikon Digital SLR, we have several upcoming classes to help you enjoy your camera.

On Tuesday, March 18th from 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm at the Westwood Community Center, we will be hosting Canon Discovery Day – Essential Functions of Your SLR Camera. Enter the world of the digital SLR and learn about your camera, and how to make great pictures with it. We’ll take you out of “automatic,” but we won’t overload you with too much detail.

You’ll see many examples of great photography, and learn techniques to use exposure, composition, flash, and a variety of lenses to get the same types of results. Our Basic Discovery Day class is a three-hour investment in your EOS digital SLR that will pay dividends over and over as you grow with your camera system.

During this course you will:

  • Become familiar with the operation and features of your EOS camera, and discover how and when to control them for dramatic results
  • Learn to expand your creative options, using different camera features and photographic techniques to evolve your pictures from snapshots to photographs
  • See actual examples of how Canon lenses and Speedlite flashes can be used to add impact to your pictures

Tickets for Canon Discover Day – Essential Functions of your SLR are available now on eventbrite or at Bergen County Camera in Westwood.

We have two upcoming Nikon Seminars. A Basic level seminar on April 2nd entitled, “Introduction to your SLR” and a Intermediate seminar on May 6th entitled, “Tips and Tricks”.

The Basic Level Class on April 2nd, covers the very basics of Auto mode, followed by how to get out of auto mode. The class focuses largely on scene modes and camera controls for exposure, white balance and focus. Composition and tips on improving photos are the main, non-technical areas that the class covers. This class is good for absolutely anyone with a camera, especially beginners and new DSLR owners.

Tickets for Nikon’s Basic Seminar on April 2nd are available now on Eventbrite or at Bergen County Camera in Westwood.

The Intermediate Class on May 6th, covers many of the topics that one might explore after learning the basics of camera terminology and exposure. Topics covered include flash photography, custom settings, lenses, autofocus settings, metering and more.

Tickets for Nikon’s Intermediate Seminar on May 6th are available now on Eventbrite or at Bergen County Camera in Westwood.

We hope you can join us for at least one of these excellent learning opportunities from Canon and Nikon.

Thumbnail previews in Windows 7 for Nikon NEF files

It’s a common complaint from Windows 7 users that they cannot see the thumbnail previews of their images when using Windows Explorer. Essentially they get a NEF logo as shown in the screenshot below. Not very helpful when you’re trying to find an image quickly!

NEF Thumbnails without codec

This can be very frustrating for the RAW shooter. Nikon has an excellent RAW codec which adds this capability to Windows 7. Once installed you can work with RAW files just like you would JPEG and TIFF.  To download Nikon RAW CODEC visit Nikon’s download page. A screenshot from after the installation is shown below.

NEF Thumbnails after Nikon codec install

As with any system update you always want to make certain you have backup of all your important data, information, pictures, etc. before installation. This RAW codec is updated regularly and the most recent version 1.14.0 includes support for the new Nikon D3200 camera.

Snow – Photographing Winter’s Majesty

The weekend’s precipitous frozen flurry presented a wondrous opportunity to capture the majesty of winter’s cloak. Armored in boots, cap and gloves, I marched into the white of Sunday morning’s golden light with my Nikon D-SLR and a spare battery, of course, warm and snug in the pocket of my Gortex jacket!
