Tips for Making a Great Holiday Card
It’s no secret that for most of us, the holiday season is the one and only time we mail out personalized greeting to friends and family members each year. And since we only do this once – we say ‘do it right’ and take the time to create the nicest, most meaningful greeting that you can send.
Use these tips and suggestions for a killer holiday card:
- Invest in having a professional photography taken of your family, kids, or pets. Trust us, you’ll appreciate having that image in 10 years.
- If you’re sending cards on a budget, plan a time to get a great shot with your mobile phone camera. Add a subtle overall filter or lighting enhancement to give everyone a fresh look. If that fails, a well done selfie can work.
- Splurge a little on the card style. Try a uniquely shaped die-cut card, folded card design or upgrade to press printed card stock. Your card is sure t stand out with and of these options.
- Order an extra 6-12 cards for the unexpected. You never know who you’ll receive cards from and it’s always a nice gesture to return the hello with a card of your own.

Drivesavers Offering FREE Hurricane Harvey/Irma Data Recoveries
Drivesavers, a company we have worked with for years to retrieve precious ‘unrecoverable’ data, has decided to offer free recoveries to those who lost data as a result of the recent Hurricanes.
Houston residents are just starting to deal with the Hurricane Harvey aftermath and already we have an even bigger hurricane, Hurricane Irma, on its way to Florida. DriveSavers hopes to help by giving victims an opportunity to regain irreplaceable personal, business and financial data.
Free data recovery service is currently available for victims of Hurricane Harvey who have water damaged devices resulting from the flooding in Texas.
We will also be offering free recovery to victims of Hurricane Irma for their water damaged devices.
Because exposure to water and air cause corrosion on electronic circuitry, we have deadlines for these devices: September 15th for Harvey devices and September 30th for Irma devices. There is a limit of one device per business or household. Customers needing additional recoveries, and those with multi-disk devices such as RAID, NAS and SAN devices, are eligible for a 50 percent discount off the regular service fees.

Preventing Memory Card Trouble – Best Practice
Preventing errors:
The main preventable causes of digital camera disasters are:
- Continuing to shoot past the cameras low battery warning. If the battery goes dead while the camera is saving an image to your card or transferring images to your computer more than likely, your card will become unreadable. Using a card reader (powered by your computer) rather than your camera cable (powered by your battery) reduces risk.
- Never shoot until the card is full – reading 0 pictures left
- Ejecting the memory card while the camera is saving a file (light still flashing).
- Opening the card access door before turning the camera off especially if still saving (light still flashing)
- Switching to view mode while the camera is saving an image or
- Improper storage leading to Physical Damage
- Using the same card in multiple cameras – this may cause unpredictable results
- Using cards after they exhibit errors – replace cards after you experience trouble
Reducing your risk in the future:
There is no guarantee that you can prevent all errors or will be able to recover files but there are some things you can do to MAXIMIZE your chances of recovery before you run into trouble. The best approach is to archive your images on the memory card to Cloud, DVD or Blu-Ray or other safe media. Once you’re certain the images are all copied, you should FORMAT your card.
Formatting the card sets the card up to receive new images sequentially written to the disk. This means that the picture is stored in one complete area on the memory card. Over time if you frequently erase and retake many pictures, the camera is unable to save the files in one complete piece and needs to store the image in many pieces called FRAGMENTS on the memory card.
Should the media become corrupted; the recovery process can only recover the first portion of a fragmented file. An example of an image recovered from a fragmented file is shown below.
The next image was recovered from a media card with CONTIGUOUS files affording you the best chance of a full recovery.
What to do after disaster strikes:
When you get the scary message “CARD ERROR” or (CH) there is a very good chance that images can still be recovered from your media card. First, don’t do anything with your card. Remove your card from the camera. Don’t run Windows Scandisk or any other utility on your memory card. Don’t format the card in your camera or computer. It is essential you don’t do anything with the problem card in order to maximize the chances for a good recovery. This is why we suggest carrying multiple cards in your camera bag.

DriveSavers Recovery Services
Any memory cards that are not recoverable by our standard file recovery service can be sent for advanced recovery from DriveSavers. Although this can be expensive, they may be able to recover images when we are unable to. All jobs sent to DriveSavers through Bergen County Camera receive a 10% discount off their regular prices.

July Classes
July 7th – Advanced Digital Photography
Join BCC’s John Tworsky and Paul Carretta for a 2 hour continuation of Intermediate Digital Photography. This class is designed to provide the next step in your digital photography learning. Topics to be covered include advanced camera operation; setting white balance, raw file format and when to use, time exposures and flash. Additional photographic topics to be discussed include flash photography, composition, metering with a grey card, converging verticals and more. Suggested Pre-requisite: An adjustable camera or DSLR and our Intermedaite Digital Photography class. Of course there will be plenty of time for questions at the end of the presentation. Course handouts include test your knowledge assignments, Basic and Intermediate class reminders, special offers, computer tips and helpful programs. No money is needed in parking meters in Westwood after 6PM.
July 14th – Nikon Basic
The very basics of Auto mode, followed by how to get out of auto mode.This class focuses largely on scene modes and camera controls for exposure, white balance and focus. Composition and tips on improving photos are the main, non-technical areas that the class covers. This class is good for absolutely anyone with a camera, especially beginners and new DSLR owners. Join Bergen County Camera on Tuesday, July 14th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Tickets are $25 per person.
July 15th – Nikon Intermediate
This is an intermediate to advanced level DSLR class that covers many of the topics that one might explore after learning the basics of camera terminology and exposure. Topics covered include flash photography, custom settings, lenses, autofocus settings, metering and more. Join Bergen County Camera on Wednesday, July 15th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Tickets are $25 per person.
July 22nd – Photographing Children
Special guest, photographer Shelly Kusnetz, joins us on July 22nd from 7 PM until 9 PM to teach her great techniques of how to photograph children and capture the true essence of your child. With tips on the technical aspects and the personal approach. Tickets are $50.00.

July 28th – Basic Digital Photography
Join Bergen County Camera’s John Tworsky and Paul Carretta for a 2 hour introduction to Digital Photography. This class is designed to provide the basics of digital photography regardless of the type of digital camera you are using or even if you are looking to buy your first. Topics to be covered include basic camera operation, batteries, storage media, card readers, choosing a resolution, compression, limitations and advantages of digital photography, making prints & enlargements, and storing & archiving images. Of course there will be plenty of time for questions at the end of the presentation. You’ll also receive a list of assignments to test your knowledge.
Join BCC’s John Tworsky for a two-hour class introducing Adobe Photoshop. This course is for first time and beginner Photoshop CS & Photoshop Elements users and will cover computer & program requirements, acquiring images, image formats, storage considerations and a basic overview of the capabilities of Photoshop. Examples include opening images, rotating, preparing images for email, preparing images for printing, image adjustments (brightness, contrast & color), fixing crooked images & scans and printing multiple images on a single sheet of paper. Although this class is presented on a PC, most if not all information will carry over to use on Macintosh.
July 29th – Intermediate Digital Photography
Join BCC’s John Tworsky and Paul Carretta for a 2 hour continuation of Basic Digital Photography. This class is designed to provide the next step in your digital photography learning. Topics to be covered include exposure (f-stops, shutter speeds, ISO), using shutter speeds to control motion, using f-stops to control depth of field, and ISO to control sensor sensitivity. We’ll talk about composition, tripods, monopods, self timers, keeping your images safe and more. Suggested Pre-requisite: Basic Digital Photography. Of course there will be plenty of time for questions at the end of the presentation. Course handouts include test your knowledge assignments, basic class reminders, special offers, computer tips and helpful programs. No money is needed in parking meters in Westwood after 6PM.
