August Customer Spotlight – John Kingston

Welcome to our thirty-first Bergen County Camera Customer Spotlight. This monthly posting features a customer who’s made an impression on us. They might have grown in their understanding of photography, gained a mastery of the craft and / or have become a strong advocate of our way of doing business in the world of photography. During the next month you will see this customer’s images displayed on our digital signs in store, in our emails, blog posts and social media.

John Kingston is our customer spotlight for the month of August. We hope you both enjoy and are inspired by this new addition to In Focus and look forward to your comments and suggestions. Below you will find a word from John, followed by some of his images in the gallery below.

Light: noun.  The natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible.
“the light of the sun”.

That pretty much says it all, it’s what photographers seek, need and look for. Ever since I first picked up a camera in my teens, I’ve been chasing it, even though I didn’t realize it.

I was born in Ipswich, MA and graduated from Holliston High School, class of ’67. After high school, I attended art and photography school in Boston. After 2 trips across the US in the 70’s, I finally got a real job; first at Russ Berrie as a toy designer, then finishing my career at Pearson Education as a text book designer. Early in my career I enjoyed oil painting and pen & ink drawing. My paintings focused on abstract and contemporary themes, while my drawings focused on more realistic topics such as portraits of people, homes and buildings. After retiring in 2012, I rediscovered my love of photography. Now I travel around the tri-state area looking for interesting places and subjects to shoot. I also enjoy woodworking and started selling handmade wood address numbers on Etsy.

Photographers who most influenced me in my early years were Edward Weston and Ansel Adams. Today however, I am inspired by contemporary photographers such as Mads Peter Iverson, Mark Denny, Tom Mackie, Joshua Cripps, Michael Shainblum and others.

I began shooting 35mm in high school, and then moved up to large format cameras for landscape photography during my travels across the US. Processing my own film and making my own prints was the end result. I spent a lot of time in the darkroom.

I enjoy all types of photography, from macro to landscape. I currently use a Nikon Z6 with lenses ranging in focal lengths from 14-400mm.

Around 2016 I discovered Bergen County Camera and have been a happy customer ever since. The people there are extremely knowledgeable, and most are past or current professional photographers. If you have a question, need something explained, or simply looking for advice- these are the people to see. I buy all my photography gear at BCC, and only if they don’t carry a product will I go elsewhere. Thank you, Bergen County Camera, for spotlighting my work.
